Your lawn is the most distinguishing feature of your house.

Beyond everything else, your lawn is the first thing neighbors, guests, and friends look at when determining whether you have a healthy home.

It only takes one glance for people to tell whether or not you keep up after your lawn. Long yellowing grass is not a good look and sends a clear signal that you have not looked after your lawn for some weeks.

Conversely, a lush green lawn tells all who drive by your house that you value your home and spend your weekends maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

It only takes a few hours each weekend to maintain your lawn. Use these five easy tips to quickly develop a lawn that is the envy of your neighborhood.

Tips for a Healthier Lawn

Follow these five tips for a vibrant green lawn.

  1. Test your soil

One of the most easily missed steps to lawn maintenance is, very few homeowners check the pH level of their soil.

Your soil’s pH balance determines your lawn’s capacity for growth and will tell you what kinds of fertilizer your grass needs in each area of your lawn.

Soil testing kits are available at nearly every hardware store and come with a small price tag. Perform this test in early spring and then fertilize your lawn shortly after.

Your soil’s pH results can vary from neutral, to alkaline, to acidic. It doesn’t matter how acidic your soil is, it matters how you adjust your lawn care.

Determine what your soil pH is, and you will then be able to purchase the correct kind of fertilizer.

If you have ever wondered why you have one sustained yellow patch on the north side of your lawn, check your soil pH in that area and the answer will soon be apparent.

  1. Proper watering

The proper amount of water can do wonders for your lawn. The issue is that many homeowners either overwater or underwater their lawn.

It can be almost impossible to know how much water your lawn needs. Still, it harder is to ensure the water you do provide is properly distributed.

The best way to ensure proper water distribution is to invest in an irrigation system.

Irrigation systems range from sprinklers to trenches. You can even get smart irrigation systems that measure exactly how much water your lawn needs through daily measurements.

  1. Mow your lawn

All homeowners know they need to mow their lawn, but no one knows how often to mow, or how tall their grass should be.

Before you mow, make sure your grass is long and dry, so you don’t clog up your mower.
Likewise, the blades of your mower must be sharp for maximum efficiency. The best time to mow is when it is dry but not too hot. Shooting for 80 degrees or lower.

You should never cut your grass blades under 1/3 of an inch as they will lose water (especially on hot days) and once dehydrated, your grass can easily succumb to the elements and leave behind a yellow, shriven corpse. It’s important that your grass retains water for the lush green look you desire.

  1. Loosen soil

Freshen up the dirt in your lawn by breaking up stubborn lumps of dense soil.

Soil that is overly compressed will not grow grass. However, weeds do love dense soil and will happily grow in the grass’s place.

Consider aerating your lawn in early spring to help with this issue.

  1. Control the weeds

Show the weeds of your lawn who is boss before they grow out of control.

Weeds grow quickly so they need to be stopped before they spread.
